Kyoto - Traditional Japan preserved in a modern landscape

Kyoto is perhaps the one major tourist destination in Japan, that is a 'must-go' if you're interested in immersing yourself in the country's rich historical roots, whilst experiencing its vibrant cityscape. Being only a bullet train away from Tokyo, as well as Osaka, Kyoto is easily accessible, and can be visited as a day trip, or even an overnight stay if you're willing to spend more time. Be aware that a bullet train to the location is costly! However, if you're planning to make multiple trips via Shinkansen (Bullet train), I would strongly advise in making an investment in a JR rail pass, which allows for unlimited travel during a set period of time. If not, it's always OK to purchase a Suica Card, the Japanese equivalent to Australia's Opal Card. A Suica Card however, is usable in many places other than the train station. Many vending machines in Japan accept Suica Card as a form of payment, as well as some select restaurants, and a tourists' best friend - Seven Eleven.

The city of Kyoto is regarded as one of the most flat cities in Japan. Thus, bicycle hire shops are scattered throughout the city, and one of the best ways to experience everything the city has to offer, is to grab a group of friends and hire some bikes. Cycling by rivers is an experience only available in Kyoto. Further, cycling allows for ease and efficient travel to the multiple temples and shrines that are situated in Kyoto. Bike hire is cheap, and with the culture of Japan being regarded as particularly friendly, it's rare that your bike would get stolen.

During my personal experience, my group of friends decided to cycle to a shrine, however, I was interested in a clothing store that was in the urbanized area of the city. We split up, and found each other soon after by cycling and connecting through portable wifi. From this experience alone, you can see how easy it is to navigate through Kyoto.

So, to the culture lovers out there who also enjoy the technicalities of the urbanized world, I urge you to give Kyoto a visit. I guarantee you won't regret it, because I sure didn't.
